Man funds wedding by selling childhood Pokemon cards worth $40k

A man in the UK recently made enough money from selling a few rare Pokémon cards – specifically three Charizards – to completely pay for his wedding. He’d rediscovered an old collection he’d forgotten about.

Andrew Braund, 37, initially intended to sell some items from his childhood collection to help with bills, estimating they were worth around £500. However, when he looked through the cards again with a friend who collects, he discovered that certain pieces were much more valuable than he thought.

The New York Post reports that the most important items discovered were three Charizard cards from the 2003 Skyridge collection, which is a highly desirable set for Pokemon Trading Card Game collectors.

Once graded by PSA, the three items were auctioned at Ewbank’s and together earned over $40,000.

Braund said he felt dizzy and nearly panicked when his friend told him the potential value of his Charizard cards.

A highly-rated holographic Charizard card, despite being stored for years, recently sold for $21,250. Another copy, in near-mint condition, fetched $16,250, and a different version of the card, with a reverse holographic design, sold for $3,500.

I was really happy to see all three of my streams do way better than I expected! It actually earned me around $41,000, which is amazing because I can now put that towards my wedding. Seriously, a huge weight off my shoulders!

This is just the newest example of how popular Pokémon cards are becoming in the resale market, with cards like Charizard selling for a lot of money. While most older collections aren’t worth that much, stories like this prove that even a few forgotten cards can unexpectedly change someone’s life.

Last February, Logan Paul made headlines by selling a rare Pikachu Illustrator Pokémon card for an incredible $16 million. More recently, a Pokémon card dealer was amazed to discover a child’s collection worth tens of thousands of dollars.
