How to Train Your Dragon 2 crew member loses fingers during production accident

During the making of How to Train Your Dragon 2, a crew member unfortunately lost fingers in an on-set accident.

The first film adapted the popular animated series into a live-action adventure, featuring Mason Thames, Nico Parker, Gerard Butler, and Nick Frost. It tells the story of young Viking Hiccup, who unexpectedly befriends a dragon named Toothless, and then works to show his village that dragons aren’t necessarily enemies.

The next How to Train Your Dragon movie will continue the story of Hiccup, and this time he discovers his mother, Valka, voiced by Cate Blanchett. The film also introduces a new villain, Drago, played by Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, who plans to conquer the world with a massive dragon army.

During the making of How to Train Your Dragon 2, a member of the film crew was seriously injured.

According to Variety, a special effects technician from How to Train Your Dragon 2 was involved in an accident at Elstree Studios in early April while working in a workshop.

A crew member suffered a serious hand injury involving a saw, resulting in the loss of multiple fingers. They underwent extensive surgery hoping to reattach them, but unfortunately, the surgery was not successful. The exact details of how the incident occurred are still unknown.

Whether the accident has affected filming is currently unknown, and Universal Pictures hasn’t released any official statement about it. As of now, the movie, directed by Dean Deblois, is still planned to come out on June 11, 2027.

It’s unfortunately not unusual for accidents to happen on large film and TV sets. For example, a rigger tragically died during the filming of Marvel’s Wonder Man in 2024. These kinds of safety concerns were a major factor in the 2023 strike involving thousands of film and television workers.
