A sports reporter became an instant hero when he retrieved a home run ball that a man had taken from a young fan. The incident quickly gained attention on social media.
It’s rare to catch a home run ball at a baseball game, particularly in a large stadium.
When something highly sought-after becomes available, people will often go to great lengths to obtain it. This has sometimes caused frustration online, particularly when adults acquire items that children were hoping for.
A similar situation happened again on April 27th at a Cleveland Guardians game. After Guardians player Daniel Schneemann hit a home run, an adult grabbed a ball that landed near a young girl. The man quickly rushed down the steps to get the ball, even though the girl was also trying to catch it.

Immediately after he grabbed the souvenir, the commentators started questioning his actions. “Is he really going to take that?” one asked while reviewing the replay. His colleague agreed, saying, “That just can’t be happening.”
Shortly after, Ryan Bass from MLB TV came over and gave both the girl and her brother a baseball. He then took a picture with them.

Nikki DeVore, the girl’s mother, said the man ultimately gave her daughter the ball after a few innings. He thanked the Tampa Bay Rays broadcasters for sharing the story.
She expressed her gratitude to Ryan and the city of Tampa for resolving an issue. She specifically thanked Ryan for prioritizing all young baseball fans.
That was an incredible display of sportsmanship. My daughter and I were overjoyed and cried tears of happiness. I’m incredibly proud of my children for how they behaved tonight, and I’m also so grateful to the city of Tampa and its fans for their support of my child.

The DeVore family quickly solved their problem, but Drew Feltwell and his son, Lincoln, weren’t so lucky.
In September, Philadelphia Phillies fans were caught up in online controversy when a woman asked a player, Drew, to give her a home run ball that had landed close to her seat.
The Feltwells did receive some gifts from the Phillies, but the issue wasn’t resolved quickly and lasted for a few days.
