Man buying ingredients for steak dinner discovers live frog in lettuce

A couple in Western Australia got a big surprise when they found a live frog hidden inside a bag of lettuce they’d purchased for dinner. They were planning to have steak and salad when they made the unexpected discovery.

The find occurred in Esperance, a small coastal town about 700 kilometers southeast of Perth. It started when the flatmate of a New Zealand couple, Laura Jones and Billie Le Pine, came home with groceries from Woolworths.

According to the pair, their flatmate casually revealed the surprise while unpacking the groceries.

Jones told ABC Perth that when his housemates came home, one of them, who he described as very laid-back, said, ‘Hey, I found a frog in my lettuce!’

A video on social media showed a tiny green frog stuck inside a sealed produce package. According to Le Pine, the frog was about the size of a hand and probably came from eastern Australia with the shipment of produce.

“That’s a good-sized frog for a journey,” he remarked. “It likely came from the east, just like most of our produce—it travels from eastern Australia all the way to Esperance.”

He added that the lettuce bag’s air holes may have helped keep the amphibian alive during the trip.

The lettuce bag has holes for ventilation to help keep it fresh. On the way, he grabbed a snack and got some fresh air.

Woolworths responds

We found this little frog and, honestly, we all fell in love with him, so we named him Greg! We decided to give him a good home near the dam just outside of town, hoping he’d be happy there.

Jones explained they took the animal outside for some fresh air, and then it let go of the lettuce it was holding. Since they live near a dam, it enjoyed a short swim with the lettuce before hopping away.

Woolworths stated they were investigating what happened, describing it as a one-time occurrence.

“Woolworths takes product quality and food safety very seriously,” the company said in a statement.

The supermarket said its lettuce suppliers have thorough cleaning and quality checks in place before the lettuce is packed and sent to stores.
