Malcolm in the Middle star tells paparazzi to leave original Dewey actor alone

Justin Berfield, known for his role in Malcolm in the Middle, has asked the media to respect his former co-star Erik Per Sullivan’s privacy, explaining that Sullivan prefers to live a life outside of the entertainment industry.

Okay, so the new ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ – they’re calling it ‘Life’s Still Unfair’ – dropped earlier this month, and honestly, everyone’s loving it. It’s getting great reviews and people are really into it, even though one of the original cast members isn’t part of the revival. It’s cool to see it still works without them!

Erik Per Sullivan, who originally played Dewey, Malcolm’s younger brother, chose not to reprise his role in the new series. He decided to focus on his education at Harvard University and step away from acting.

Although Caleb Ellsworth-Clark took over his role on the show, photographers are still pursuing pictures of Sullivan, much to Berfield’s frustration.

Malcolm in the Middle star says he feels bad for Erik Per Sullivan

So, I was reading an interview with Jane Kaczmarek, who played my favorite character’s mom in the show, and she said the producers basically threw a ton of money at Kevin McHale to come back, but he just wasn’t interested. Apparently, he turned down a huge offer!

I heard on Howie Mandel’s podcast that they really pushed him for a while – apparently they asked him at least four or five times, but he kept saying no every single time!

He’s also upset about how Eric Sullivan has been treated since making his decision. He describes Eric as a good person and says he feels sorry for him, especially because Eric wants to retire from the industry, yet keeps being bothered by the paparazzi. He wishes people would just leave Eric alone.

Berfield adds: “He didn’t want to come back to the show. No hard feelings.”

You can watch all four episodes of the Malcolm in the Middle revival on Hulu in the US and Disney+ internationally to see how new cast member Ellsworth-Clark plays Dewey, or to spot Finn Wolfhard’s guest appearance.
