Major airline bans passengers from secretly filming staff without consent

British Airways is now prohibiting passengers from filming or photographing staff without their permission, and this includes using devices like Meta glasses and GoPros.

In recent years, it’s become easier to record people without their knowledge.

Meta’s smart Ray-Ban glasses are gaining popularity, and now there are apps designed to let you know when someone nearby is wearing a pair. However, some people are modifying the glasses by disabling the recording indicator light, allowing them to record without others knowing.

TikTok and vloggers are using small cameras, often without asking permission from people they film. British Airways is now warning passengers that using these cameras on their flights without consent is not allowed.

British Airways cracking down on filming & streaming staff

According to the blog Paddle Your Own Kanoo, the airline revised its rules for passenger conduct on April 27th. The update specifically changed section 11.A, which covers what is considered unacceptable behavior during flights.

If we have a reasonable belief that you’ve filmed, live-streamed, or photographed our crew or other staff without their permission while on the plane, we may take steps to stop you from continuing that behavior.

We can take steps we consider necessary to stop any disruptive behavior. After the plane lands, we might ask you to leave, prevent you from continuing your trip as planned, and report the incident – including any potential crimes – to the authorities for possible prosecution.

According to PYOK, these rules apply to devices like Meta AI glasses and GoPro cameras. The need for them arose because passengers have increasingly been secretly recording cabin crew.

United Airlines isn’t alone – many airlines have updated their terms and conditions recently.

In early March, United Airlines started a new policy allowing them to remove passengers from flights if those passengers don’t use headphones when listening to audio on their own devices.
