To mark 25 years since the release of the first Lord of the Rings film, a collection of commemorative 50p coins is being launched.
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Peter Jackson’s film, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, the Royal Mint in the UK has created a new series of 50 pence coins.
The initial installment of the series centers around a golden ring, famously inscribed with Elvish writing that declares: “One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.”
The other side of the coin features the standard portrait of King Charles III, just like on other 50p pieces.

This coin is also unique because of its special design. When light shines on it, a hidden message and the Eye of Sauron appear. This is a reference to a scene in the movies where Gandalf casts the One Ring into a fire to demonstrate its power.
This 50p coin is the first of seven unique designs, with six more planned for release over the next few years. Each movie in the series will be celebrated with two special coins: the first will honor Fellowship of the Ring in 2026, followed by The Two Towers in 2027, and The Return of the King in 2028.

If you’d like to reserve your set before they’re released, you can find them on the Royal Mint’s website. Keep in mind that the number of upgraded coins is limited, with quantities ranging from just 100 to 20,000.
Okay, so if you’re into the coin that lights up, it’s $33. But they also have a classic silver one for $20, and if you really want to splurge, there’s a gold version that’s a bit pricey at $3244! There’s a regular, non-light-up version too, and that one costs $124.
These collectibles are perfect for fans of Tolkien, especially now with all the exciting things happening in the world of The Lord of the Rings. A new movie, ‘The Hunt for Gollum,’ is being made, the third season of ‘Rings of Power’ comes out in November, and the creators of ‘Kingdom Come: Deliverance’ are developing a role-playing game set in Middle-earth.
