The upcoming live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon 2 has announced who will play the villain. Following the success of the first movie’s remake this summer – it earned $636 million globally – the sequel is scheduled to be released on June 11, 2027. The original actors are set to return for their roles.
According to Deadline, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson will play the villain, Drago, in a live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon 2. Djimon Hounsou originally voiced the character in the 2014 film. Ólafsson previously appeared in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, voicing Ragnar the Rock in The Hidden World.
The news comes after it was revealed yesterday that Cate Blanchett will return to voice the character Valka, a role she previously played in two animated films. Following Gerard Butler’s reprise of Stoic, Hiccup’s father (played by Jay Baruchel in the animated movies and Mason Thames in the upcoming live-action film), many wondered if Blanchett would also return to play Hiccup’s mother.
Dean DeBlois, who previously directed the franchise, is back to write and direct the next installment, scheduled for 2027. The original cast – Nico Parker, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, and Harry Trevaldwyn – will return. Universal has not yet announced who will play Eret, a key new character in the sequel.
