Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Octet Cast Could Not Be More Exciting

Get excited, musical theater lovers! The cast for Lin-Manuel Miranda’s film version of Dave Malloy’s musical, Octet, has been revealed, and it’s fantastic. The cast includes stars from two of the most popular musical films of recent years: Amanda Seyfried (known for The Testament of Ann Lee) will play Jessica, and Rachel Zegler (West Side Story) will play Velma.

The talented cast doesn’t end there! Emmy winner Sheryl Lee Ralph, known for Abbott Elementary and Dreamgirls, will play Paula. Two stars from Hamilton, Jonathan Groff as Henry and Phillipa Soo as Karly, are also joining the show. Rounding out the cast are Tramell Tillman (from Severance) as Marvin, and Gaten Matarazzo (of Stranger Things) as Toby, both bringing their acting and singing skills. Paul-Jordan Jansen, who was part of the ensemble in the recent Sweeney Todd revival, completes the impressive lineup.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, fresh off his Oscar nomination for Tick, Tick… Boom!, returns with Octet. He’s once again chosen to adapt a musical that started Off-Broadway, this time by an unnamed visionary composer, instead of directing something he created himself. Octet is a unique musical featuring an eight-person choir and focusing on a support group for internet addiction. It’s a strange, captivating, and potentially challenging piece that doesn’t seem like an obvious choice for a film – and that’s precisely what makes it so interesting.
