It’s nearly mid-2026, and we’re still waiting for any official news or a release date for the next Ghost Recon game, even after hoping for an announcement.
Ubisoft is keeping details about their new game, currently known as Project Over, tightly under wraps. However, it looks like people with inside information are starting to leak details despite the company’s efforts.
Simply put, the next Ghost Recon game appears to be heavily inspired by the original game from 2001. And honestly, that’s the most exciting news I’ve heard about a Ubisoft game in years.
Ghost Recon Goes Back to Basics

A recent post by Ubisoft leaker AgainTx confirmed the new game takes inspiration from ‘Ready or Not’ and is set in Asia, likely a Southeast Asian country, as previously rumored. The source also emphasized a shift towards a simpler user interface, with the game prioritizing stealth and a more realistic experience.
Ghost Recon Breakpoint suffers from a seriously cluttered user interface that really hurts the experience. Instead of enjoying the game’s world and new features, I spent the first day just trying to navigate the confusing menus and the poorly designed Erewhon base.
It looks like the series is getting back to its roots, focusing on the intense, realistic, and challenging team-based combat that originally made it so popular.
A recent post from French insider j0nathan, after trying an early version of the game, has me even more excited. They say we’ll be able to choose from a selection of operators for each mission, just like in previous games.
One of the things that made the original Ghost Recon great was the freedom to customize your team – you could choose a sniper for long-range maps or a demolitions expert to clear obstacles. It looks like the new game might be returning to that same approach, giving players that level of control again after 25 years.
Still Distinctively Ubisoft
According to those familiar with the game, it still features elements common in Ubisoft’s online games. To make your team more effective, you’ll need to complete weekly challenges to improve their abilities. It’s currently unclear if these challenges will be straightforward, like completing a mission stealthily, or more unusual, similar to the complex upgrade system found in the game Breakpoint.
The ability to build your team based on your needs was a central tenet of the first Ghost Recon
One thing that’s still unclear is how special operator abilities will work. The previous game, Ghost Recon Breakpoint, had classes with almost super-powered skills, though they later added a way to turn those off. I’d like to see more believable and realistic mechanics this time around – things like snipers being naturally more accurate at long distances, or specialists getting small improvements to certain weapons like rocket launchers or machine guns.

Project Over will include a central base for your team, where you’ll also have some leadership responsibilities. If done right, this will make the experience more immersive, giving you a place to relax and recharge while deployed.
One of my main frustrations with the otherwise fantastic Ghost Recon Wildlands was the absence of a home base. Having a personal space to return to between missions – when you’re not busy taking down criminal organizations or taking out enemies from long range – would have allowed players to experience the game at their own speed.
Since Ubisoft hasn’t officially revealed details about Project Over yet, this is all the information we have for now. I’m hopeful it will return the Ghost Recon series to its original style, and that’s a type of game we really need.
