Even long-running TV shows need to be careful with their spending. Ice-T explained that his character, Sgt. Fin, hasn’t been in as many episodes this season of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit due to budget constraints. The show decided to bring back Kelli Giddish, and couldn’t afford to keep both her and Ice-T as full-time cast members. Ice-T understands the decision and is okay with appearing in fewer episodes this season. He’s not leaving the show, but he’s a bit uncertain about season 28. After 27 years with the show – second only to Mariska Hargitay – he’s not going to say anything negative about it, as it has been good to him. He’s actually grateful for the break, as it allows him to work on other projects, and he’s happy to see fans are noticing his absence. He jokes, “I’d rather be missed than ignored!”
Kelli Giddish left the main cast of SVU in 2022 after 12 seasons, but she’s returned for guest appearances several times, including again this year. She told Extra she’s thrilled to be back, saying the show feels fresh even in its 27th season. SVU is currently airing its 22-episode season, and with Giddish and Ice-T each appearing in about half of the episodes so far, there seems to be enough space for all the detectives at the precinct.
