Kiki’s Delivery Service being turned into live-action TV series by the BBC

The beloved animated film Kiki’s Delivery Service, created by Studio Ghibli, is getting a live-action remake as a 10-episode television series. The show will be based on the original novel that inspired the movie.

Kiki’s Delivery Service started as a children’s book written by Japanese author Eiko Kadono in 1985. She got the idea for the story from towns she visited along the European coast and from the experiences of becoming an adult.

Kiki is a young witch who moves to a new city to become independent. The story’s focus on figuring out who you are and where you belong deeply resonated with Hayao Miyazaki, the renowned director from Studio Ghibli.

He adapted the story into an anime in 1989, which helped establish Studio Ghibli’s reputation, and now the BBC is creating a new television version.

Boxtrolls scribe writing Kiki’s Delivery Service TV series

BBC Studios Kids & Family is teaming up with Wheel in Motion, a UK production company, and Kadokawa Corporation from Japan to create a live-action TV series inspired by Kiki’s Delivery Service.

The show will be based on the first book in Kadono’s six-book series and will consist of 10 thirty-minute episodes.

Irena Brignull, known for her work on films like Skellig, The Boxtrolls, and The Little Prince, will be the writer for this series. She shared her excitement about the project, saying, “Kiki is a wonderful character in fiction, and I’m delighted to help bring her story to a new audience with this adaptation.”

She beautifully demonstrates the power of starting over and connecting with others, inspiring us to pursue our passions and find meaning in life with courage and kindness.

Kadano is optimistic about the upcoming series, stating that Kiki is embarking on a new journey and he believes it will be fantastic. He’s eager to finally see his vision realized on screen.
