One of the most enjoyable aspects of the DC Comics universe is seeing how familiar characters can be reimagined across different worlds. The comic series Batman/Superman: World’s Finest has played with this concept, showing us a bizarre alternate reality where Lex Luthor actually admires Superman, and the Joker is the most rational person around. The latest issue features Superman and Batman teaming up with a very unusual group of heroes – a Justice League from another Earth.
In Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #49, written by Mark Waid and Mark Russell and illustrated by Marcus To, Batman and Superman find themselves stranded on Earth-3. This alternate world is a warped reflection of their own, where everything is reversed – villains are the good guys, and heroes are the bad. When Superman and Batman are captured, they’re at the mercy of their evil doppelgangers, Ultraman and Owlman.
Luckily, a way out seems possible, thanks to a version of The Riddler from another Earth – Earth-3. While still Edward Nygma, his story is very different. On his world, Owlman severely disfigured him by throwing him into acid. Surprisingly, this actually made him even smarter. It also led him to create a team that functions much like the Justice League, though they aren’t officially called that.
Who is in the Earth-3 Justice League?
The Riddler has assembled a team including the Mad Hatter, Toyman, Scarecrow, Silver Banshee, and Catwoman. They’re also planning to break Two-Face out of Arkham Asylum and add him to their group. Initially, the heroes are uneasy about sheltering such notorious villains. But Batman convinces them that if he and Superman were secretly evil, they wouldn’t have survived this long.
It’s strange how similar this team is to their evil counterparts from the main Earth. Usually, the versions of heroes on Earth-3 have completely different names and powers. For example, Ultraman gets stronger from Kryptonite but is weakened by sunlight. Unfortunately, this story doesn’t explain much about the origins of the Earth-3 Justice League.
Despite appearing frightening, the heroic qualities of these characters are consistently demonstrated. Scarecrow uses his fear toxin to subdue opponents without causing harm, effectively stopping them from fighting. Furthermore, the whole group rallies to protect a vulnerable Superman, even when facing a much stronger opponent like Ultraman.
