Jumanji: The Next Level Returns to Hulu Charts Ahead of New Sequel

The 2019 film Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, starring Dwayne Johnson, is currently popular on Hulu. This comes before the release of the next Jumanji movie, Jumanji: Open World in theaters.

Currently, Jumanji: The Next Level is the ninth most popular movie on Hulu in the United States, according to FlixPatrol. It’s one of just two new movies to make the Top 10 list this week, joining The Boss Baby at number eight.

As a movie buff, I noticed only one change on Hulu’s Top 10 today – The Hunger Games: Catching Fire slipped from number nine to ten. Everything else stayed put! Sam Raimi’s Send Help is still number one, which is awesome, and classics like The Devil Wears Prada and We Bury the Dead are holding strong right behind it.

Dwayne Johnson Relaunched the Jumanji Franchise in 2017

The story of Jumanji started in 1995 with the film starring Robin Williams, which was originally based on a 1981 children’s book by Chris Van Allsburg. In the movie, the magical board game brings dangerous jungle elements to life, challenging anyone who plays it.

The 2017 film Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle kicked off a new series of Jumanji adventures. It modernized the story, changing the original board game into a video game. Unlike the first film, where the jungle came to the players, this time the players were pulled into the game itself.

The players controlled avatars played by Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan inside the game. Rhys Darby and Bobby Cannavale played characters within the game world, and Nick Jonas played a person who had been stuck in Jumanji since 1996.

Similar to the original 1995 film, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle performed very well commercially, bringing in $962.5 million globally. This success led Sony to create a sequel, Jumanji: The Next Level (2019), which also proved to be a big hit at the box office, earning $800 million worldwide.

Two years after the events of Welcome to the Jungle, The Next Level traps the same crew – including Danny DeVito and Danny Glover – in a new, even more perilous version of Jumanji.

Jumanji: Open World Will Conclude the Reboot Series

The Jumanji reboot series is ending this year with the new movie, Open World. It seems the characters will initially appear as non-playable characters, or in “demo mode.” While details are scarce, this suggests Open World will feel more like the original 1995 Jumanji film than the recent sequels.

Jumanji: The Next Level is available to stream on Hulu, while Jumanji: Open World will be .
