Jordan Firstman’s new movie, Club Kid, is making waves after selling for a reported $17 million at the Cannes Film Festival. A competitive bidding war ultimately ended with A24, the leading indie studio, acquiring the film. Other companies vying for it included Mubi, Focus Features, Searchlight, and Netflix. Club Kid—written, directed, and starring Firstman—has quickly become a standout film at the festival, premiering on May 15th. The story centers on a carefree young man who unexpectedly learns he has a ten-year-old son, forcing him to take on adult responsibilities. The film also features Diego Calva (known for Babylon) and Cara Delevingne.
I’m hearing that Club Kid made the first big sale of the festival, and honestly, it makes sense. A lot of the films, including another one called Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, already had distribution deals lined up before they even got here. Plus, this year’s festival is noticeably lacking in big Hollywood productions – there’s only one American film, Ira Sachs’s The Man I Love, competing. So, it’s not surprising that a talked-about American film that was still available snagged a huge deal. Everyone’s looking to Firstman to bring the next big sale, though!
