The Survivor 50 finale played out pretty much as everyone predicted: Aubry Bracco took home the win, Joe Hunter stumbled through his final speech, and the audience enthusiastically supported Cirie Fields. However, the most memorable part of the episode was when Jeff Probst made a noticeable mistake, and we all witnessed it. It was a fairly predictable night, so seeing a slip-up was surprisingly satisfying.
The drama unfolded during the final four elimination round. After winning immunity in Fiji, Aubry chose Rizo Velovic and Jonathan Young to compete in a fire-making challenge, guaranteeing one of them would be the last member of the jury. The show then switched to the live finale in Los Angeles, where Jeff Probst announced Rizo’s fate. “You become the final member of our jury; take a spot over here,” Probst said, immediately before revealing that Rizo had lost the game. The live audience remained silent, which visibly surprised Probst. He paused, asking, “What just happened?”
“They didn’t show the fire,” Rizo said quietly. Probst quickly responded with a surprised “Oop!” and admitted he wasn’t sure what had happened. He then announced there would be one last surprise for the contestants before the show went to a commercial break.
When the show returned from the break, it was clear Jeff Probst had been told about the mistake that happened. He explained they’d originally planned to show the fire-making challenge and then have the loser, Rizo, talk about himself. But, Probst announced with a laugh, they decided to throw in one last Survivor twist instead. The audience erupted in laughter. He then smoothly transitioned to showing Rizo losing the fire-making challenge to Jonathan, skillfully recovering from the awkward moment despite still appearing embarrassed.
Let me tell you, watching Jeff Probst stumble during the live Survivor finale was… something else. Apparently, after it happened, contestant Carolyn Rizo was totally thrown! She said Jeff tried to give her a moment to shine, but she was still reeling from being voted out two times in a row. She was trying to be a good sport, hoping he’d realize what had gone wrong, but he just didn’t seem to get it. Honestly, though, that’s part of what made it so great! Survivor is usually a perfectly oiled machine, so seeing Jeff genuinely confused in the moment was just… satisfying. He simply couldn’t process that a mistake had been made, and frankly, it was hilarious. A little schadenfreude never hurt anyone, and thankfully, you can still relive the whole thing on Paramount+.
