Japanese Coast Guard uses VTuber to draw in new recruits

A virtual YouTuber, known as a VTuber, is taking on a surprising new job: appearing in an official recruitment poster for the Japan Coast Guard.

The Fourth Regional Coast Guard Headquarters announced a partnership with the well-known VTuber, Shioriha Ruri. She will appear in promotional content aimed at attracting new recruits to become Coast Guard officers.

The Coast Guard announced that a digital version of Ruri will be featured on flyers and used at upcoming recruiting and information events.

Ruri seemed genuinely surprised by the news, even playfully suggesting the partnership was almost too good to be true.

She expressed disbelief and excitement on X when she learned that Shioriha Ruri would be featured in a recruitment poster for the Fourth Regional Coast Guard Headquarters. She initially thought it was a joke – referencing a humorous poster idea – but called being selected ‘a tremendous honor’.

The VTuber took a moment to share information about the Coast Guard, explaining that they act as both law enforcement and emergency responders at sea. They encouraged anyone curious to learn more by checking out the original post.

Shioriha Ruri isn’t alone in using her virtual persona to support real-world causes. AZKi, another VTuber from Hololive, partnered with Japanese police to encourage safe driving. Kizuna AI has previously worked with Japanese tourism officials to attract visitors, and Sakura Miko, also from Hololive, even served as an honorary fire chief in a public safety campaign.
