Japan deploys robot wolves to fight off bear attacks

Okay, so this is amazing! There’s a company in Japan that makes incredibly realistic robotic wolves, and they’re getting flooded with orders right now. Apparently, bear attacks are becoming a bigger problem in Japan, and people are hoping these wolf robots will scare the bears away! It’s a really creative solution, and I’m so glad it seems to be helping.

Japan experienced a sharp increase in deadly bear attacks between 2025 and 2026, more than doubling the previous highest number. Reports of bear sightings, particularly in northern areas, have also increased dramatically as bears emerge from hibernation – almost four times the usual amount.

More and more bears are being spotted near where people live, work, and go to school. This has led to a greater demand for solutions to keep them away, and is putting a lot of pressure on Ohta Seiki, a Japanese company that makes robotic wolves designed to frighten bears.

The ‘Monster Wolf’ explained

The ‘Monster Wolf’ is a high-tech, motion-activated scarecrow costing around $4,000. It was designed to keep deer and wild boars away from farms and features glowing red and blue lights, artificial fur, and a menacing look with bared teeth and red eyes.

This robot is seriously creepy – it can actually turn its head like it’s scanning for prey! And it doesn’t just beep and boop; it has about 50 different sounds it can make, including some that are strangely human. It really messes with your head when you’re playing!

Due to a recent increase in bear attacks, Ohta Seiki is having trouble keeping up with orders for its protective suits. According to The Independent, company president Yuji Ohta explained that each suit is handmade, and they’re currently experiencing delays of two to three months due to high demand. He asked customers for their patience.

Ohta Seiki plans to add wheels to their Monster Wolves, allowing them to patrol areas and scare away animals. They are also interested in using AI-powered cameras in future versions of the robots.
