Recent photos shared by director James Gunn from the set of the upcoming 2025 Superman movie seem simple, but they suggest a major comeback story for a DC hero who didn’t get enough attention in the old DC Universe.
The recently released Superman photos seem like a playful way to expand the DC Universe and showcase Metropolis. However, James Gunn’s post is hinting at something more: the upcoming introduction of a significant DCU hero who didn’t get a fair chance in the previous DC Extended Universe – the Martian Manhunter.
James Gunn Just Teased Martian Manhunter With New Superman Set Photos
New photos from the set of the upcoming Superman movie show a building with the “Chocos” logo during a scene depicting an attack on Metropolis by the Hammer of Boravia. Chocos are the DC Universe’s version of Oreo cookies, but they also have a special connection to the character J’onn J’onzz, also known as the Martian Manhunter—a long-time member of the Justice League.
In DC Comics, the Martian Manhunter, J’onn J’onzz, is known for his intense love of Chocos – he becomes genuinely distressed if he can’t have them. A famous comic book story illustrates this when Booster Gold and Blue Beetle pranked him by secretly removing all Chocos from a city. This caused J’onn to lose control, transforming into a powerful, enraged version of himself using his shapeshifting abilities.
Okay, so I’m getting a really strong vibe that James Gunn is hinting at the Martian Manhunter joining the DCU down the line. And honestly? That’s incredibly cool! With all the new projects they’ve got planned, adding a character like J’onn J’onzz would be a fantastic way to keep expanding this universe.
The DCEU’s Martian Manhunter Deserved So Much More Than The Synder Cut
Martian Manhunter was actually introduced in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, though his role was quite small. He briefly appeared to warn Bruce Wayne about future dangers in potential Justice League films, storylines that ultimately weren’t developed after the series changed direction.
If James Gunn includes Martian Manhunter in a future DC project like ‘Man of Tomorrow’ (possibly in 2027 or later), it would make up for the character’s absence in the previous DC Universe. The recent hints, like the ‘Chocos’ reference, are early signs that this exciting future is being planned.
