As a big fan of the Alien franchise, I really enjoy playing Alien: Isolation. It’s a perfect example of slow-burn, atmospheric horror – being relentlessly pursued by the Xenomorph is genuinely terrifying!

Interestingly, the alien character turned out to be more intelligent than the story’s creators initially intended.

The Xenomorph’s AI Made The Final Act Longer Than Expected in Alien Isolation

Dion Lay, a writer on the game Alien: Isolation, shared in a FRVR Podcast interview that the gameplay changed significantly during development. They focused on making the alien creature constantly learn from and react to how players were behaving.

As a result, the final act of the game became much longer than initially intended. This was because players encountered a particularly challenging section, as the villain had gained extensive knowledge and posed a significant threat.

According to Lay, the development of ‘The Alien’ changed a lot as the team worked on it. He realized that achieving the desired quality took much longer than initially expected, ultimately adding significantly to the game’s total development time.

I think it would be much better if we trimmed it down to the essential parts and made it more concise. It didn’t seem so lengthy when we were working on it, but looking back now, it’s definitely too long. I’d definitely shorten it, though we felt some sections were crucial and couldn’t be removed without completely changing the overall structure.

HowLongtoBeat estimates it takes about 18.5 hours to complete the main story, which seems accurate. Many players, myself included, feel the game could have been a bit shorter towards the end, and that pacing issue explains the length.
