The people behind the It movies have hinted that a third film, It: Chapter 3, isn’t completely off the table. While the 2019 sequel seemed like the end of the story, producer Barbara Muschietti has suggested there’s room to continue. This has brought the possibility of another It movie back into the conversation years after the last one came out.
It: Chapter 3 movie sequel is still a possibility
Barbara Muschietti, co-creator of the ‘It’ films, says a third movie isn’t off the table.
While the two ‘It’ movies – ‘It: Chapter One’ (2017) and ‘It: Chapter Two’ (2019) – were generally well-received and seemed to finish the main story, director Muschietti thinks there’s still more to tell. She recently told ScreenRant that Stephen King’s original novel has many loose ends that could be developed into new films or series.
Director Andy Muschietti hinted at the possibility of continuing the story, noting there are still compelling characters and unanswered questions within the world they’ve created. He believes Stephen King intentionally left some parts of the story open-ended, or if not, those gaps are still welcome opportunities for exploration. He sees these ambiguities as exciting possibilities for future stories.
Andy Muschietti explained that rereading the source material over time has given her and her brother a new understanding of the story. Working on the first season revealed some gaps, and their perspective has naturally evolved since first reading the book as teenagers. Now in their 50s and as parents, they see things differently. Muschietti hinted that this isn’t the final chapter of the story.
HBO hasn’t confirmed a second season of It: Welcome to Derry, but director Muschietti has stated that this isn’t the end of the It story. While a third movie hasn’t been officially announced, Muschietti’s comments suggest that more films or series are still possible in the future.
