The new Netflix series, Unchosen, is currently a huge hit, and here’s the story behind how it was created.

Unchosen focuses on a British cult known as the ‘Fellowship of the Divine.’ Within this group, members are forbidden from using technology or reading outside materials, and women are expected to serve the men.

Christopher Eccleston stars as the group’s leader. Molly Windsor plays Rosie, a young woman married to Adam, played by Asa Butterfield. She begins to question the group’s beliefs after encountering an attractive newcomer.

Is Unchosen based on a true story?

While “Unchosen” isn’t a direct adaptation of true events, it draws inspiration from real-life cults. Writer Julie Gearey researched religious groups in the UK and interviewed former members to ensure the series was well-informed and realistic.

Gearey explained to Netflix that many of the participants had experienced trauma. It was crucial to assure them that they wouldn’t be recognizable to viewers and that the show would honestly and respectfully portray their emotional experiences.

According to Geary, the United Kingdom is home to over 2,000 active cults, and the actual number is likely much higher. He explains that these groups, which can be as small as a single family, tend to grow during times of significant uncertainty, like the present day.

Director Jim Loach was drawn to the project because of the writer’s personal experiences. He told The Independent that the writer, Gearey, had classmates whose parents were involved in cults, as Gearey himself grew up in that area of southern England.

I found her interviews with former cult members incredibly compelling. The script felt very relevant to what’s happening in the world today, and it seemed like a perfect moment to tell a story about people involved in cults.
