The new film explores the lengths people will go to for revenge. Based on a play by Aleshea Harris, who also wrote and directed the movie, it centers on sisters Racine and Anaia. They are determined to get even with their father for a horrific act: setting their mother on fire and severely burning them both. Driven by fury, the sisters embark on a deeply emotional quest, and the film powerfully captures their journey.
Young and Johnson have fantastic chemistry. Racine, known as “the Rough One” because of her intense anger and thirst for revenge, is brought to life perfectly by Young. Her character is consumed by rage and will stop at nothing to get what she wants. Johnson’s portrayal of Anaia, “the Quiet One,” is equally compelling, but in a very different way. Anaia is much more reluctant to use violence, creating a strong contrast with her sister and driving the story toward an inevitable confrontation.
Excellent Performances All Round, But Sterling K. Brown Stands Out Above The Rest
Sterling K. Brown delivers a standout performance in Is God Is. He convincingly plays against type as the film’s villain, a father who commits terrible acts of violence against his family. Despite limited screen time, Brown makes a powerful impact, particularly in the film’s climax. His portrayal of the character, chillingly nicknamed “the Monster,” is disturbingly calm and devoid of emotion. While Brown is known for his excellent work, his performance in Is God Is may be his best to date.
Aleshea Harris deserves significant praise for her feature film debut. Is God Is moves smoothly from one scene to the next, showcasing her skill as a storyteller. The film succeeds on many levels, but it’s particularly strong as a revenge thriller. Viewers will easily connect with Racine’s intense anger, making the twins’ quest for vengeance even more compelling. This is largely thanks to Harris, who created complex and believable characters that feel genuinely human.
Beyond the compelling story, Is God Is is a visually striking film. In a time when many movies look and feel similar, its vibrant colors – particularly in the characters’ costumes – immediately grab your attention. This, paired with the intriguing plot, makes it a captivating experience you won’t want to miss. While it might not be a mainstream hit, it’s definitely worth seeing on the largest screen you can find.
Though the story of Is God Is is straightforward revenge, the film stands out thanks to its striking style. The filmmakers make clever choices, like showing the twins’ thoughts as text on screen, which is both visually interesting and emphasizes their close connection. The flashbacks are also visually distinct, filmed in a slightly desaturated black and white. This not only clearly separates them from the present day, but also draws attention to key details about their father, like his notably white teeth.
One of the strengths of Is God Is is how powerfully it portrays both intense anger and the touching connection between the two sisters. Their relationship is a standout feature of the film, as they are both strikingly different and surprisingly alike. Even though they lead very different lives, their bond beautifully illustrates the complexities of sisterhood and how we can love someone with a completely different perspective.
By the end of Is God Is, it’s clear the film is about more than just getting revenge. Underneath the violence and striking visuals lies a story about pain, finding oneself, and how shared trauma can connect people in complex ways. This makes Is God Is a visually powerful and deeply affecting film that stays with you long after you’ve seen it.
Is God Is releases in theaters on May 15.
