Internet raises over $100k for family after dog shot by police during Knicks celebration

A fundraising campaign for Jameson, a 2-year-old dog who was tragically shot and killed by police during celebrations of the New York Knicks’ championship win in Los Angeles, has quickly raised over $100,000 in under a day.

On June 13th in Canoga Park, police went to an apartment building on Jordan Avenue after receiving a report of someone screaming. It turned out the noise came from a woman who was happily celebrating the New York Knicks’ NBA Finals victory with her family and wasn’t actually in any danger.

Jameson, a mixed-breed dog described as being part golden retriever, Saint Bernard, and poodle, was wearing a New York Knicks jersey when he was fatally shot. A video taken shortly after the incident shows his owner distraught and crying in the hallway while police officers were present.

Police reported that a large dog was barking near the woman they were talking to. Officers asked her to control the dog, and as she briefly opened and closed the door, the dog ran out and attacked an officer. The officer then fired their weapon. Thankfully, no one was hurt, according to police.

Jameson GoFundMe passes $100k

A GoFundMe campaign called “Justice for Jameson: Help Us Honor His Memory,” started by Jeremiah Garcia, has raised over $104,000 from more than 4,100 donations. Originally aiming to collect $10,000, the funds will be used to cover cremation and legal expenses.

I was really heartbroken to read about Jameson on the fundraiser page. Apparently, he passed away just ten minutes after they all celebrated the Knicks winning! It’s so incredibly sad – everyone there described him as the sweetest boy ever, and it’s just awful that he was taken from us so young.

Garcia was on a FaceTime call with his mother right after the game when he heard gunshots. He immediately went home and tragically found his son, Jameson, had been killed, still wearing the New York Knicks shirt his family dressed him in before the game.

Garcia disagreed with the suggestion that Jameson was aggressive, stating he couldn’t imagine the dog ever attacking anyone and characterizing him as a playful animal.

The person who called the police said they felt bad about it, but were worried someone inside the apartment needed help. Police are now reviewing what happened, and a special division of the LAPD is handling the investigation.
