I was so excited to hear that Priyanka Chopra Jonas‘ new Indian film, Varanasi, finally has a release date! And even more thrilled knowing it’s directed by S. S. Rajamouli – the guy who blew everyone away with RRR. Seriously, RRR was incredible, and that song, “Naatu Naatu,” deserved all the awards it got – including the Oscar and Golden Globe! It even beat out songs from huge artists like Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and Diane Warren, which is a massive accomplishment.
Director Rajamouli’s upcoming film, Varanasi, features Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Mahesh Babu, and Prithviraj Sukumaran. Described as an action-adventure similar to James Bond and Indiana Jones, the movie is scheduled for release on April 7, 2027.
The film Varanasi will span millennia and take place on multiple continents, including India, Africa, and Antarctica. Although the story is still secret, the main characters have been announced. Babu will play Rudhra, Chopra Jonas will be Mandakini, and Sukumaran will portray the villain, Kumbha.
Aside from directing, Rajamouli also wrote the screenplay, like he did for RRR.
I got a first look at footage from Varanasi way back in November 2025, and it was wild! It showed an asteroid on a collision course with Earth, but also gave us glimpses of the incredible places they filmed in – like the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica and the African wilderness of Amboseli. The teaser ended with this really cool slow-motion shot of the character Babu riding a bull, which they also used on one of the posters. Another poster showed Chopra Jonas looking super intense, holding a gun – definitely hinting at some big action sequences in the movie.
Before directing the blockbuster film RRR, S.S. Rajamouli was known for several other successful movies, including Simhadri, Vikramarkudu, Yamadonga, Magadheera, Eega, and Baahubali: The Beginning. Released in 2022, RRR received widespread critical acclaim and currently boasts a 96% rating from critics and a 94% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
