German actor Udo Kier died yesterday in Palm Springs at the age of 81. He had a prolific career, appearing in more than 200 films, and frequently collaborated with director Lars von Trier.
Udo Kier was also known for his work in video games, most famously as Yuri in Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 and its expansion, Yuri’s Revenge. He provided the voice for Dr. Peter Straub in Call of Duty: WWII and contributed to a horror project called OD by Hideo Kojima, who shared a farewell message on X after Kier’s passing.
I’m at a loss for words. It all happened far too suddenly.
The strike delayed filming of OD for quite a while, and we had to postpone it until next year. Throughout the delay, Udo and I kept in close touch via email. When we met in Milan in late September, he expressed his excitement about starting filming again, and he seemed as energetic and funny as ever, with his trademark sense of humor.
I still can’t believe this.
Udo was more than just an actor; he was a true symbol of his era. His passing is a significant loss, and someone like him will never be seen again.
Udo, rest in peace. I will never forget you.
