Dan Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games, shared with Lex Fridman that the gloomy mood of Grand Theft Auto IV was a direct reflection of his own feelings while making the game. He explained that creating one of the series’ most serious installments happened during a difficult period in his personal life.
I’d been living in New York for several years, but I wasn’t really sure if I was happy. I was dealing with my usual personal struggles. That’s why I recently revisited Grand Theft Auto IV – it’s a pretty bleak game, and it resonated with how I was feeling. I was single, unhappy, and questioning whether I even wanted to stay in the US. Everything felt unstable and uncertain, as Sam Houser put it.
The creator explained that he faced instability in both his personal life and career. Rockstar Games was still dealing with the fallout from the controversial “Hot Coffee” scandal related to the game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The issue began when players discovered a hidden, sexually suggestive mini-game within the 2004 release. This discovery resulted in legal battles, questioning by US Congress, and the temporary removal of the game from stores.
Developing the story for the fourth game was a thoughtful and somewhat stressful process. Dan Houser aimed to depict the gritty underbelly of New York City and explore the lives of immigrants, though he later questioned how well he succeeded in capturing that experience, given the time period of 2008.
The creation of the writing wasn’t done primarily in an office. The co-founder of Rockstar Games often immersed himself in the city, speaking with residents and even riding along with the NYPD on their rounds.
I tend to gather tons of notes, almost as a way to avoid actually starting the work. Honestly, it’s become a habit – or maybe it’s just my process – of delaying getting things done, he explained.
In the same interview, Houser also talked about how Red Dead Redemption and other Rockstar games were made. He also explained why he believes popular game series like GTA and Fallout are so closely tied to American culture.
