I Love Whatever Christopher Nolan Sees in Travis Scott

I’d love to experience watching the ending of Tenet for the first time again. After a complex two and a half hours, and an emotional finale reminiscent of Casablanca, the movie ends with a touching mother-son scene and the main character revealing his identity, all set to Travis Scott’s song “The Plan.” It’s a strange choice of music for a director who rarely uses popular songs in his films, but it perfectly captured the feeling of watching Tenet – confusing, yet surprisingly great. The song wasn’t just randomly added; composer Ludwig Göransson suggested the film needed a fresh feeling at the end, beyond just repeating the existing music. Christopher Nolan then invited Travis Scott to a screening, and the two discovered a shared appreciation for the movie.

It’s understandable that Christopher Nolan didn’t include Travis Scott in his film Oppenheimer given how packed the movie was. However, the two are working together again on The Odyssey, where Scott will appear on screen as a bard – a traditional storyteller. Nolan told Time magazine he cast Scott to highlight the connection between the epic tale and the art of rap, as The Odyssey was originally passed down through spoken word, much like rap music. Whether Scott will actually rap in the film remains a mystery. Details about the cast of The Odyssey are still emerging, and there are rumors of other exciting roles, like Elliot Page potentially playing Achilles.

Christopher Nolan is often seen as a serious filmmaker, but his consistent choice of musicians in his movies hints at a genuine respect for artists, especially those in popular music. From David Bowie’s memorable performance as Nikola Tesla in The Prestige, to Harry Styles’ appearance in Dunkirk (though a bit indistinct amongst the wet soldiers), Nolan doesn’t just cast celebrities – he collaborates with them. It seems he finds kindred spirits who share his creative vision, perhaps even appreciating the historical significance of Ancient Greece. There’s a playful energy in these collaborations, and it’s fun to imagine what might come next, like seeing Scott play a lyre. Hopefully, this isn’t the last time Nolan and Scott work together, as they’ve clearly found a good creative flow. An Odysseythemed album from Scott wouldn’t be surprising! The fact that Scott saw Tenet* early on and simply said it “made sense” seems to have solidified Nolan’s appreciation for him, and it’s clear Nolan is enjoying himself and not taking everything too seriously.
