Hulu Decides Fate of Handmaid’s Tale Spinoff 1 Week Before Finale

Okay, so I just finished watching the next-to-last episode of the first season, and right as I was thinking about where things were headed, Hulu dropped some fantastic news! The show is getting renewed! That means fans can breathe a sigh of relief and enjoy the finale knowing there’s more story to come. I’m definitely relieved, and it makes watching the last episode that much sweeter.

Good news for fans: Season 2 of The Testaments is officially happening! The announcement came just a week before the Season 1 finale airs on Hulu (and Disney+ outside the US) on May 27th. The Testaments, a continuation of The Handmaid’s Tale, launched with three episodes on April 8th, and new episodes have been released weekly. The first season has a total of ten episodes.

The Testaments Has Become a Streaming Sensation

As a big fan, I wasn’t shocked to hear The Testaments is getting another season! It really took off as soon as it started streaming, and its popularity just kept building week after week. I mean, by the fourth episode, viewership was up a solid 20%! And in its first eight days, people watched over 11 million hours of it on Hulu and Disney+ worldwide. Last week, after eight episodes, that number jumped to over 45 million hours globally – a whopping 76% increase from when it first dropped. It’s great to see a show like this really connect with audiences.

Set several years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale, The Testaments reveals that the ruling regime is beginning to weaken. The story centers on three characters: Aunt Lydia, a powerful figure in Gilead with secrets of her own; Agnes Jemima, a teenager raised within the system who starts to have doubts; and Daisy, a young Canadian woman who becomes involved in fighting against Gilead.

Some Changes Were Made From the Source Material

Elisabeth Moss, known for her role in The Handmaid’s Tale, made a quick appearance in the new spinoff series. The show also features Mabel Li, Brad Alexander, Isolde Ardies, Rowan Blanchard, Mattea Conforti, Zarrin Darnell-Martin, Eva Foote, Amy Seimetz, and Kira Guloien. Created by Bruce Miller, the series is based on Margaret Atwood’s novel and expands on the original story, including some adjustments like changing the ages of the characters Agnes and Daisy.

Miller explained they had to adjust some character ages. Specifically, Daisy and Nicole were originally the same age as Hannah (Agnes), and Miller wanted to maintain that relationship. While aiming to stay true to the source material, adapting the story from a book to a TV show required some changes. Books can easily move through time, but with actors, they needed to condense the timeline to account for ages.

The Testaments is streaming on Hulu.
