Sony and NCSoft have revealed a new Horizon game, called Horizon Steel Frontiers. It’s a multiplayer online game designed primarily for mobile devices, but will also be available on PC. Notably, it won’t be released on the PlayStation 5 console.
Sunggu Lee, the game’s executive producer, recently discussed it with IGN, addressing common questions about things like Aloy’s involvement, the game’s influences, and how the combat system works.
When asked about the possibility of Aloy or other familiar characters from the Horizon series appearing in Horizon Steel Frontiers, Lee explained that plans are still being developed and it’s too soon to reveal any details.
I was really excited to hear more about how Horizon Steel Frontiers connects to the other Horizon games! Apparently, it is set in the same world, but in a completely new area called the Deadlands. They’re taking inspiration from Arizona and New Mexico for the landscape, which sounds amazing. While Aloy is dealing with everything up north, the Deadlands down south are facing their own new problems. We’ll be playing as machine hunters who’ve been drawn to this wild, dangerous place – it sounds like a whole new adventure!
Horizon Steel Frontiers’ combat, while built on the same foundation of fighting large machines as the single-player Horizon games, is actually quite different. According to Lee, the focus in Steel Frontiers is on strategic positioning, quick thinking, and knowing when to strike or evade. The team aimed to maintain the thrilling feel of the original hunts but reworked the combat specifically for a dynamic, multiplayer experience.
In an interview, NCSoft revealed that Capcom’s Monster Hunter series heavily influenced the development of Steel Frontiers. According to Lee, as they built upon the idea of hunting large machines in their Horizon concept and expanded it into a multiplayer game, Monster Hunter’s cooperative hunting mechanics felt like a logical source of inspiration.
Lee also explained how the mobile and PC versions of Horizon Frontiers differ. He noted that the mobile version is great for short gaming sessions when you’re on the move, while the PC version offers deeper, more tactical combat – each version is designed to take advantage of what its platform does best.
Steel Frontiers doesn’t have a confirmed release date. Guerrilla, the team behind the Horizon games, has announced that they’re working on future installments, and a multiplayer game is a possibility.
