HBO Max’s Big Bang Theory Spinoff Teases Return of Sheldon’s Biggest Rival

Fans of the Stuart Little universe have something to look forward to this summer! Stuart Fails to Save the Universe will premiere on HBO Max in July, and a recent preview revealed that another original cast member will be returning for the new show.

Wil Wheaton, best known as a star on Star Trek: The Next Generation, also had a recurring role as himself on The Big Bang Theory. HBO Max recently released a preview of its upcoming shows, including a new series called Stuart Fails to Save the Universe. The preview features Wheaton, who seems to be using a Vulcan salute to perform magic. Kevin Sussman, who plays Stuart Bloom, says in the preview, “None of this is normal.” You can see Wheaton in the video starting at the 28-second mark.

Wil Wheaton Utilizes Star Trek Magic in Stuart Fails to Save the Universe

Wil Wheaton was a memorable opponent for Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) on the show, and their rivalry began with a childhood incident. As kids, Wheaton missed a Star Trek convention, which Sheldon never forgot. When they finally met as adults, a strong dislike immediately flared up between them. Their constant bickering became a funny, ongoing joke, but surprisingly, it eventually led to a genuine, respectful friendship. This made Wheaton one of the most popular guest stars throughout the show’s twelve seasons.

It’s currently unknown whether Jim Parsons (Sheldon) and Will Wheaton will appear together in the new show, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe. While the spinoff stars Brian Posehn, Lauren Lapkus, and John Ross Bowie, it’s unclear if any other actors from The Big Bang Theory will make guest appearances. The show’s creators aren’t saying whether any familiar faces will pop up, keeping potential cameos a secret.

Will Sheldon Cooper Appear in Stuart Fails to Save the Universe?

When TVLine asked if original Big Bang Theory stars like Sheldon and Leonard would make appearances, co-creator Chuck Lorre playfully responded that he was sworn to secrecy. He assured viewers they would enjoy the new show, though.

Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is a spin-off from The Big Bang Theory, but it’s unlike most sitcoms. It blends comedy with science fiction, starting after Stuart damages a machine built by Sheldon and Leonard, which causes the multiverse to begin falling apart. Now, it’s up to Stuart and his friends to fix reality as it fractures into strange alternate versions of itself, before everything is destroyed.

Stuart Fails to Save the Universe will debut on HBO Max on July 23, 2026.
