Halo’s scrapped battle royale turned into an extraction shooter: report

A recent report suggests that Halo’s previously cancelled battle royale mode is being reimagined as an extraction shooter.

After Halo Infinite came out in 2021, many people talked about the possibility of a battle royale mode being developed for the game. The plan was for it to be a separate, player-versus-player experience, much like Call of Duty’s Warzone.

Rumors suggested this feature was planned for release in 2022, but it was ultimately cancelled. Developers who worked on the project later confirmed its cancellation. However, a recent report indicates the idea wasn’t abandoned entirely – it was reworked and transformed into a different feature.

According to a video by Rebs Gaming, a well-known source of Halo leaks, the battle royale game formerly known as Project Tatanka was put on hold in late 2022. The project has since been reworked into Project Eker, which is now a co-operative, extraction-based shooter being developed using Unreal Engine.

We last heard about this game or mode in the summer of 2023. As of today, we don’t know how much progress has been made, or if it will be released on its own.

One of Rebs’ sources says that Certain Affinity, which is helping develop the battle royale game, is now working on the next main Halo game. This suggests the battle royale may become a multiplayer mode within that new Halo title.

We don’t know much about the specifics of the extraction-based shooter yet, but Reebs shared some information about the battle royale mode it was potentially building on. This mode was designed as a “training simulation” taking place on a UNSC ship, meant to get players ready for the world of Zeta Halo.

The map was planned to feature iconic Halo levels like Blood Gulch and Valhalla, with players arriving via drop pods. While nothing is official yet, it’s likely some of these ideas will make their way into the game’s extraction mode.

For years, Halo players have wanted a battle royale game, inspired by the success of titles like Fortnite and Apex Legends. Now, with extraction shooters like Arc Raiders and Marathon gaining popularity, it seems Halo Studios is exploring that style of gameplay instead.
