The acclaimed director is teaming up once again with Ron Perlman, who starred in the Hellboy movies, for a brand new fantasy film. While it’s not a continuation of the Hellboy series, it’s still great news for fans of both the director and actor.
According to reports, Guillermo del Toro‘s next film will be a stop-motion animated adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro’s 2015 novel, The Buried Giant. Del Toro calls it a challenging and complex stop-motion film intended for adult audiences, not families. He’s also working with Ron Perlman again, though it’s currently unknown what role Perlman will play.
Guillermo del Toro Are Collaborating Once Again
Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman have worked together for many years, starting with del Toro’s early film, Cronos. They’re best known for the Hellboy movies, but their collaborations also include Blade II, Trollhunters, The Book of Life, Nightmare Alley, and Pacific Rim. Perlman recently provided a voice performance in del Toro’s 2022 stop-motion film, Pinocchio. Now, del Toro hints he plans to use a similar stop-motion technique for his upcoming adaptation of The Buried Giant, prioritizing a genuine and authentic feel.
As a film buff, I’ve always thought about how tricky it is to blend fantasy and reality. It really bothers me when you try something like a live-action Pinocchio and suddenly a clearly artificial puppet is moving around – it just feels…wrong, like it doesn’t fit. It’s that ‘uncanny valley’ effect, and it totally pulls you out of the story. I feel the same way about movies with fantastical creatures alongside real actors. For me, a truly immersive experience means having all the creatures – trolls, fairies, everything – feel like they’re made of the same ‘stuff’ as the live-action elements. Achieving that kind of seamlessness is going to be a massive undertaking, and honestly, it’s going to take years of work, but I think it’s worth it. It’s incredibly challenging, but that’s what makes it exciting!
Kazuo Ishiguro’s novel, The Buried Giant, centers on an aging British couple, Axl and Beatrice, who live in a reimagined post-Arthurian England. A unique aspect of this world is that its inhabitants suffer from memory loss. Guillermo del Toro is adapting the story into a stop-motion film, co-writing the screenplay with Dennis Kelly (known for Matilda the Musical). The film is planned for release on Netflix.
What About Ron Perlman Returning Hellboy 3?
Whether or not a third Hellboy movie will ever happen remains to be seen, but some fans are still hoping director Guillermo del Toro and actor Ron Perlman will team up to make it. Del Toro has previously said a third film is unlikely and appears to have abandoned the idea. However, Perlman has repeatedly expressed his willingness to reprise the role, believing he has more to offer as Hellboy.
Perlman expressed interest in making a third film in the series, stating that it was originally planned as a trilogy. He said he’d be happy to return if they could complete the three movies, but only under those conditions.
The Buried Giant does not yet have a release date.
