GU Distills ‘Neon Genesis Evangelion’s’ Cinematic Identity Into a Faded, Everyday Uniform

Summary

  • The collaborative release centers on a vintage-style t-shirt collection featuring graphics from the acclaimed anime franchise
  • Structural design details are highlighted by a specialized washed finish applied directly to the title logo and mecha prints
  • The lineup prominently features Unit-01, Unit-00, and Unit-02 alongside their respective pilots and signature subtitles

GU is heading back to Tokyo-3 with a brand new Neon Genesis Evangelion collaboration.

This collection centers around a unique washed finish – a process used after garments are made to make them look intentionally worn and vintage. The clothes themselves are based on classic t-shirt shapes, serving as a backdrop for detailed prints of mecha and characters. This faded effect is applied to the franchise’s logo and to graphics showcasing the detailed, biomechanical designs of Units 01, 02, and 00.

Okay, so the shirts aren’t just random Evangelion stuff – they’re really cool and detailed. Some have the Eva units printed on them with their pilots, like Shinji with Unit-01, Rei with hers, and Asuka too. Other designs play with the text from the show, mixing it with Unit-02’s imagery. And then there are some that just straight-up recreate famous scenes, like a really awesome shot of Unit-01 in action. It’s a lot of thought put into the designs, which is pretty sweet.

Even decades after its debut, Hideaki Anno’s Neon Genesis Evangelion continues to be a hugely influential part of global pop culture, known for its complex characters and unique mechanical designs. Now, a new collaboration with GU brings the series’ iconic imagery to everyday clothing. The collection blends the anime’s rich history with practical, modern style, using its memorable apocalyptic themes and graphics on a range of comfortable tops.
