The extremely violent horror film is quickly becoming one of the most popular movies on streaming platforms. Since its addition to Paramount+ around two months ago, it’s been steadily climbing the charts and continues to scare viewers.
The movie Primate is now the No. 1 film on Paramount+ in the United States, according to FlixPatrol. It’s just behind Top Gun: Maverick and has climbed three spots in the rankings. Primate has been in the U.S. Top 10 for almost 60 days since its release on March 25th. It’s also back in the Top 10 in Canada, currently at No. 4.
Primate Is Not a Movie for the Squeamish
The movie Primate has been compared to Stephen King’s Cujo because both stories center around an animal becoming dangerously violent after contracting rabies. While Cujo features a rabid St. Bernard, Primate focuses on a chimpanzee named Ben who goes on a violent spree, forcing a group of friends to struggle for their lives.
Director Johannes Roberts has a deep connection to the film Cujo. He’s said that seeing it originally inspired him to become a filmmaker, explaining, ‘I wanted to be able to do that,’ and that it sparked his passion for the craft. He’s revisited the story in various ways over the years, but hopes his current version is a true tribute to the iconic Stephen King story.
Johannes Roberts, known for directing films like 47 Meters Down and The Strangers: Prey at Night, helmed Primate. The film was produced by Walter Hamada, who also produced hits such as It and The Conjuring. The cast features Johnny Sequoyah (from Dexter: New Blood), Jessica Alexander (The Little Mermaid), Troy Kotsur (CODA), Victoria Wyant (I Fought the Law), Gia Hunter (Sherlock & Daughter), along with Benjamin Cheng, Charlie Mann (The Watchers), Tienne Simon (All the Devils Are Here), and Miguel Torres Umba (Institute).
Primate Has Been a Success for Paramount
Watkins points out that Primate is a standout horror film. Its success demonstrates that the genre doesn’t need CGI to be effective, relying instead on impressive practical effects. The movie delivers everything horror fans enjoy – gore, action, scares, and familiar themes – but grounds it in enough realism to feel truly frightening and believable.
Primate is streaming on Paramount+.
