HoYoverse, the creators of the popular turn-based RPG Honkai: Star Rail, unexpectedly announced that an anime adaptation is being made, much to the delight of fans. The game is currently at Version 4.1, but HoYoverse recently previewed Version 4.2, which is scheduled for release in April. This update will introduce two new playable characters – Silver Wolf LV.999 and Evanescia – and continue the game’s ongoing story.
The latest information about the next update was shared during the livestream for Version 4.2 on the official Honkai: Star Rail YouTube channel. Along with previews of new characters, HoYoverse hinted at the future direction of the Planarcadia storyline, building on recent discoveries about Phantasmoon Games. The stream also covered details about events planned for the game’s third anniversary. But the biggest surprise came at the very end with an unexpected announcement.
Honkai: Star Rail Anime Confirmed By HoYoverse
The Turn-Based RPG Is Being Adapted For TV
Near the end of the Honkai: Star Rail 4.2 livestream, HoYoverse revealed a new trailer. The trailer primarily focused on the Stellaron Hunters – characters like Kafka, Blade, and Silver Wolf – showing them at a party and battling enemies trying to take them out. It also offered quick glimpses into their everyday lives.
The trailer is visually stunning, with impressive character designs and animation – which isn’t surprising, given that it’s being made with Mappa Productions. Viewers initially thought it was just another high-quality promotional video, as HoYoverse is known for those. However, it’s now clear this trailer is for a brand new anime series, especially considering HoYoverse already has an anime project based on Genshin Impact in development with Ufotable.
Honkai: Star Rail Anime Is Being Produced By Mappa
The Studio Is Behind Hits Like Jujutsu Kaisen & Chainsaw Man
The biggest news from HoYoverse’s Version 4.2 livestream was likely their partnership with Mappa Production to create an anime for Honkai: Star Rail. Mappa is a highly respected studio known for popular and critically acclaimed anime such as Jujutsu Kaisen, Dorohedoro, and Chainsaw Man, making this a significant collaboration.
I’ve been following the studio’s work, and they’ve recently been involved with Season 4 of Attack on Titan and Hell’s Paradise. It’s a large studio, similar in scale to Ufotable, but what really sets them apart is their distinct artistic style and how consistently they release new content. They just made an announcement, though they didn’t give a specific release date. Interestingly, it sounds like the Honkai: Star Rail anime might actually come out before the Genshin Impact anime, which is a bit surprising considering Genshin Impact‘s adaptation was announced a long time ago.
