Gerard Butler’s 94% RT Action Thriller With a Canceled Sequel Returns as a Prime Video Streaming Hit

Despite the news that Gerard Butler won’t be filming a sequel to his action thriller Plane, the movie is finding success again as a streaming hit. It’s back on the Prime Video charts, three years after its initial release in theaters.

FlixPatrol reveals that Plane re-emerged on the Prime Video Top 10 Movies in the United States chart on June 15, coming in at eighth place. It actually outperformed two critically acclaimed recent releases — (#9) and Jason Statham’s A Working Man (#10). Released in 2023, Plane follows Brodie Torrance (Butler), a commercial pilot who teams up with suspected murderer Louis Gaspare (Mike Colter) in order to save his passengers after an emergency landing.

Critics & Audiences Universally Loved Butler’s Plane Movie

The movie Plane immediately jumps into action and maintains a fast pace. The story begins with the pilot, played by Butler, heroically landing his plane on a war-ridden island during a lightning storm to save everyone on board. However, their troubles are far from over, as most of the passengers are quickly taken hostage by armed rebels.

Brodie needs Louis’s help, but Louis is actually a murder suspect being transported to Toronto by the FBI. This strange pair will have to team up to keep everyone safe, and the situation is more complicated than it seems.

Lionsgate’s 2023 action film, Plane, was a financial success, bringing in $74.5 million globally despite a $25 million production cost. While some found the storyline unbelievable, many critics enjoyed its thrilling and fast-paced action.

The movie Plane has received positive reviews, earning a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating of 79% on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences also seem to enjoy it, with 94% of over 1,000 verified viewers giving it a positive rating. According to Rotten Tomatoes, while Plane follows a fairly typical action-adventure formula, Gerard Butler’s performance makes it an enjoyable thriller.

Despite Its Popularity, Gerard Butler Dropped Plane’s Sequel Unexpectedly

Despite the film Plane doing well in theaters and remaining popular on streaming platforms, plans for a sequel called Ship have been cancelled. Actor Mike Colter, who was going to return as Louis Gaspare, announced the news in February at Fan Expo Vancouver.

Gerard unexpectedly decided not to proceed with the plan at the very last minute, and there wasn’t much conversation about it, according to Colter. He withdrew his commitment just two weeks before it was supposed to happen, leaving everyone scrambling to find a solution. Ultimately, the plan fell apart.

Colter said the story would have continued directly after the events of the plane crash. While Butler wouldn’t act in the film, he was still producing, giving him a lot of influence over where the story went. “We were going to pick up right where we left off, showing what happened to his character and how he escaped the island,” Colter explained. “I was really looking forward to it.”

Plane is now streaming on Prime Video.
