Gerard Butler’s 140-Minute Crime Movie Officially Releasing On Biggest Streamer Worldwide

Gerard Butler’s crime movie is stealing its way to the biggest streaming service in the world.

The Scottish actor truly became known as an action star after playing King Leonidas in the 2006 film 300. Throughout the 2010s, he continued this trend with the Has Fallen movie series, and took on other action-packed roles in films like Geostorm (2017), Den of Thieves (2018), Greenland (2020), and Plane (2023), with one of those films now available for streaming.

After eight years, the action crime film Den of Thieves is now available on the world’s most popular streaming service. The 2018 film, written and directed by Christian Gudegast, features Gerard Butler as a detective with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. He’s tasked with preventing a highly skilled crew of former Marine Raiders from pulling off an incredibly ambitious robbery of the Federal Reserve Bank.

The action thriller Den of Thieves, which first appeared in theaters in 2018, will be available to stream on Netflix starting May 1st, as reported by What’s on Netflix. It’s just one of several movies joining the service next month, alongside classics like 13 Going on 30, Borat, Burn After Reading, Green Book, Jumanji, Meet the Parents, Meet the Fockers, Pretty Woman, Schindler’s List, and The Breakfast Club.

The show features a talented cast including Pablo Schreiber, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Meadow Williams, Maurice Compte, Brian Van Holt, Evan Jones, Mo McRae, Kaiwi Lyman-Mersereau, Dawn Olivieri, Eric Braeden, Lewis Tan, Cooper Andrews, Jermaine Rivers, Max Holloway, Oleg Taktarov, Jay Dobyns, Alix Lapri, Matthew Cornwell, Nick Loeb, and Michael Bisping.

Critics generally didn’t love Den of Thieves, giving it a 42% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While they acknowledged its fast pace and clear inspiration from heist classics like Michael Mann’s Heat (1995), they felt it didn’t quite live up to those films. Viewers seemed to enjoy it a bit more, with a 64% audience score.

The film Den of Thieves did reasonably well in theaters, earning $80 million globally on a $30 million budget. A sequel, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, came out in January 2025, bringing back Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr. The story follows the sheriff, played by Butler, as he pursues Jackson Jr.’s character, a suspected thief, to Europe, hoping to convince him to join forces for a heist.

Similar to the first Den of Thieves movie, the sequel got a mixed reaction from critics and didn’t perform well in theaters, earning only $58.4 million worldwide despite costing $40 million to make.
