Despite being a popular spin-off, Prime Video has canceled Gen V after only two seasons, halfway through the fifth season of its parent show, The Boys. This cancellation is particularly frustrating because characters from Gen V haven’t yet made an appearance in the current season of The Boys.
Spin-offs often feel like unnecessary additions to popular franchises, created simply to profit from existing successful brands. When Gen V was announced, many were skeptical, fearing it signaled that The Boys had lost its satirical edge and was simply trying to capitalize on its own popularity.
Despite previously criticizing other superhero series for constantly creating merchandise, The Boys appeared to be doing the same thing with its spin-off, Gen V.
Despite being a spin-off, Gen V quickly became a standout success, and many viewers actually found it even more compelling than season 4 of The Boys. Both seasons of Gen V demonstrated its value, leaving fans eager for it to continue beyond its initial two seasons.
Because Gen V is closely connected to The Boys and shares many story elements, it would have been difficult to continue the show after The Boys concluded. However, Gen V also developed its own independent storylines and created a unique world within the larger Boys universe. This setup would have allowed Gen V to continue even after The Boys finished its fifth season.
It’s now official: season 3 of Gen V won’t be happening, which is especially disappointing following the news about season 5 of The Boys.
Gen V’s Characters’ Absence In The Boys Season 5 Makes The Spinoff’s Cancellation Worse
Okay, so I’m four episodes into season 5 of The Boys, and I’m starting to wonder what’s up with the supes from Gen V! Remember how they teamed up with Starlight at the end of Gen V season 2? They haven’t shown up at all in The Boys yet. We’ve gotten like, a couple of little mentions, but no one’s explained where they are or why they aren’t helping Starlight fight Homelander. It’s a little frustrating, honestly!
Those unfamiliar with Gen V might not realize they’re missing, but fans who followed the show’s two seasons will likely feel something’s off with The Boys‘ final episodes. It seemed like Prime Video was building these characters up to play a major role in how The Boys would end.
Marie from Gen V was initially seen as a possible threat to Homelander, but her lack of appearance in season 5 implies her importance has diminished. Although Gen V season 2 provided some closure for the young superheroes, their exclusion from the main storyline leaves their character development feeling incomplete.
Fans expect these characters to appear in season 5 of The Boys. However, after getting to know them well over two seasons of the spin-off show, their roles in the main series might feel too short and disappointing.
The Boys Had The Perfect Opportunity To Introduce Gen V’s Supes In Its 1st Episode
The first episode of The Boys season 5 kicks off with Starlight and Butcher attempting a risky operation to save Hughie, Frenchie, and Mother’s Milk from a supe-controlled “Freedom Camp.” Given how dangerous the situation is, it seems logical they wouldn’t try to handle it alone, especially considering the powerful characters from Gen V could have been valuable allies against Homelander’s forces.
Despite being part of the same universe, the characters from Gen V haven’t appeared in the first few episodes of The Boys season 5. With the season now halfway over, it feels odd that the show has seemingly ignored some of its important characters.
Even though Marie, Cate, Emma, Jordan, and Sam might not have a lot of screen time in the upcoming episodes of The Boys season 5 and with Gen V ending, fans are hoping they all receive the meaningful and complete conclusions their stories deserve.
