Friday The 13th Franchise Officially Returning This Year After 17-Year Wait

Friday the 13th is about to get even scarier.

After 17 years, a new Friday the 13th movie is officially in the works and scheduled to be released later this year. The series centers around Jason Voorhees, a terrifying killer who haunts Camp Crystal Lake. While later films focused on Jason himself, the original movie told the story of his mother, Pamela Voorhees, and her quest for revenge after her son tragically drowned. The last installment was a reboot attempt released in 2009.

Peacock has announced that the prequel series to Friday the 13th, called Crystal Lake, will premiere on October 15th. The show stars Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees and explores the Voorhees family’s story before the tragic events at Camp Crystal Lake. William Catlett also stars as Levon Brooks. Currently, details about the plot are limited, but the October release date is perfect for the Halloween season.

A24 announced the Crystal Lake TV show in October 2022, with Bryan Fuller – known for shows like Hannibal and American Gods – set to lead the project. Production faced setbacks due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes, and again when Fuller was let go by A24 in 2024. Brad Caleb Kane, who co-ran It: Welcome to Derry, took over as showrunner, and filming took place from June to October 2025. By April 2026, the series was nearing completion of post-production, suggesting a release date was coming soon.

Okay, so we’ve got some more names joining the cast of the Crystal Lake series! Devin Kessler will be playing Briana Brooks, Cameron Scoggins is Dorf, and Gwendolyn Sundstrom is Grace. Right now, though, their characters’ stories are still under wraps, just like with Marlon Catlett’s Levon. We’ll also be seeing some familiar faces return – Callum Vinson will play a young Jason, and Nick Cordileone is back as Ralph. Joy Suprano, Danielle Kotch, Christopher Denham, and Phoenix Parnevik are all reprising their roles as Rita, Claudette, Theodore Landau, and Barry, respectively. Honestly, at this point, it’s all a bit mysterious. We have no idea how the plot will unfold or how big each character’s part will be. It’s exciting, but definitely keeps you guessing!

It looks like the new Crystal Lake series will tell its own unique story, heavily inspired by the very first Friday the 13th movie. The show will particularly focus on Pamela Voorhees, and depict Jason as a young boy when the story begins. It’s currently unknown if this new story will connect to the existing Friday the 13th timeline or exist separately, but the series aims to be a faithful origin story that honors the spirit of the original films.

With a release date of October 15th, Crystal Lake is shaping up to be a great choice for spooky season viewing. The Friday the 13th series is in development, and we can expect to learn more details about the show before it premieres on Peacock.
