Filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola mourned the passing of Robert Duvall, a longtime friend and star of many of his movies. Duvall died on February 16th, surrounded by family, according to his wife, Luciana. Coppola shared the news on Instagram with photos of the two working together, calling Duvall a phenomenal actor and a key figure in the early days of American Zoetrope. He listed some of their collaborations, including The Rain People, The Conversation, The Godfather films, Apocalypse Now, THX 1138, and Assassination Tango. Duvall received Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor for his roles in both The Godfather and Apocalypse Now.
Al Pacino fondly recalled working with Robert Duvall, saying it was an honor and praising his natural talent, deep understanding, and remarkable gift. He added that he would miss him. Robert De Niro simply offered his blessings to Duvall, expressing his hope to live a long life and wishing him peace.
Robert Duvall often shared stories about the playful pranks he and the cast of The Godfather would play on set, hoping to get a reaction from Marlon Brando. He recalled one instance during the wedding scene where the actors were playfully mooning each other, as he revealed during a 2017 reunion.
