Season 4 of Bridgerton is back, and while everyone’s discussing the new episodes, the biggest buzz is around a challenge facing Francesca.
The popular historical drama on Netflix is based on novels by Julia Quinn. Season 4 specifically adapts Quinn’s book, An Offer From A Gentleman, and centers on Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) and his blossoming romance with Sophie Baek (Yerin Ha), a woman shrouded in mystery.

Jess Brownwell, the showrunner for Bridgerton, recently discussed the storylines for Benedict and Sophie with Variety. She also talked about Francesca (played by Hannah Dodd) and her difficulties adjusting to married life, particularly her struggles with intimacy and finding fulfillment with her husband, John (played by Victor Alli).
It’s likely a mix of things – this issue is fairly common, but also deeply tied to Francesca’s personality. It’s not so much about a conflict between John and Michaela, but rather that Francesca seems disconnected from her own body and feelings, which could be contributing to her difficulty reaching orgasm.
During the first part of season 4, Francesca seeks advice from the women in her life, including her mother, Violet Bridgerton, and her sister-in-law, Penelope. However, Violet previously tried to get information from her daughter Daphne—the season’s star in season 1—without success.
Francesca’s story is still unfolding in the book When He Was Wicked, and we haven’t seen the full scope of her plot yet. While it’s unknown which season of the Shonda Rhimes series will center on Francesca, the show is clearly setting things up for a major reveal. We’ll see more of Francesca and her husband, and explore the potential connection with John’s cousin, Michaela.
