It’s been almost ten years since Nintendo released Star Fox Zero for the Wii U back in 2016. Now, a new game called Wild Blue Skies is in development, and it’s strikingly similar to the classic Star Fox. Interestingly, it’s being created by Giles Goddard, one of the original programmers behind the beloved Star Fox franchise.
IGN recently showed off gameplay footage of Wild Blue Skies, specifically the entire second level called ‘Hurricane.’ The video is reminiscent of Star Fox 64, featuring Bowie Stray, a dog pilot, leading his team – Chuck, Roe, and Thorne – through a fierce storm battle. We also get a good sense of the characters, and it’s clear Thorne fills the same role as Slippy Toad from Star Fox 64.
I’m really loving how Goddard and the team at Chuhai Labs have woven in all this fun dialogue, like a back-and-forth between Bowie and his crew, even during gameplay! It’s awesome that even the final boss, who they call Boss, participates in the chatter. Plus, they’re planning a bunch of different environments for us to explore, and Bowie can already pull off this incredible barrel roll maneuver – it totally reminds me of Star Fox! It’s shaping up to be a really immersive experience.
Wild Blue Skies, previously called Wild Blue, will be published by Humble Games and is planned for release on PC via Steam, although a specific date hasn’t been announced. It’s not the only game on Steam inspired by Star Fox; Whisker Squadron: Survivor launched its full version earlier this year.
Despite the fact that there haven’t been any new Star Fox games recently, comedian Adam Conover shared that Nintendo had once considered a stop-motion animated series based on the franchise, created with his former company, CollegeHumor. He also mentioned a live-action Legend of Zelda show that was proposed for Netflix. According to Conover, both projects were cancelled after details about them became public.
