Following the release of *The Mandalorian & Grogu* in May 2026, *Star Wars: Starfighter* is slated to hit theaters a year later. The movie stars Ryan Gosling in an currently unknown role, and we’ve just gotten our first glimpse of him on set. While it looks great, the location where they’re filming isn’t what I anticipated for a *Star Wars* film.
Starfighter director Shawn Levy went on Instagram to post a picture of Gosling with his co-star Flynn Gray, who’s playing the nephew of Gosling’s character. Levy revealed that the two actors are out “somewhere in the Mediterranean Sea,” as you’ll see below:

I didn’t anticipate the first images from *Star Wars: Starfighter* would be of Ryan Gosling and Flynn Gray filming in the Mediterranean Sea. Of course, water has appeared in *Star Wars* before – we saw the entirely aquatic world of Kamino in *Attack of the Clones*, *The Clone Wars*, and *The Bad Batch*, and the water-covered moon of Kef Bir, where Rey and Kylo Ren fought, in *The Rise of Skywalker*.
More to come…
