While a new Battlefield: Bad Company game isn’t currently in development, the main designer from the second game hasn’t dismissed the possibility of revisiting the series in the future, despite not being very hopeful.
The team at EA DICE has shared some early ideas for Battlefield 6, aiming for a 2026 release. While the studio has faced some challenges recently, fans are hoping for significant changes, like the revival of a previously discontinued Battlefield series. However, even someone who originally worked on the game doesn’t think these hopes will be realized anytime soon.
Slim chances for the return of Battlefield: Bad Company?
David Goldfarb shared his thoughts on the future of Battlefield, but admitted his predictions were just guesses. Since he no longer works at EA DICE, he doesn’t know Electronic Arts’ plans for the game.
Despite hopes for a revival, the lead designer of Bad Company 2 recently told PC Gamer that a new game in the Battlefield: Bad Company series is unlikely.
The people who originally made Bad Company have since moved on to different game studios around the world. For example, Robin Hulberg Goldfarb started The Outsiders (known for Metal: Hellsinger, though the studio recently closed), and some of his former colleagues from DICE now work at Embark, the creators of the popular ARC Riders. This makes it unlikely that the original team will ever reunite to make another Bad Company game.
EA could definitely make another game in the Bad Company series even without the original development team. However, it likely wouldn’t be as commercially successful as a mainline Battlefield title.
The initial game sparked some interest, but sales were only moderate for a well-known franchise – around 2.6 million copies were sold. The second game performed better over time, however it sold 2.3 million copies in its first month, which was less impressive than the 5 million copies the first game sold in its first week. A year later, Battlefield 3 was released and ultimately surpassed the sales figures of the second game.
According to Goldfarb, the new Bad Company will likely appeal to a more niche audience, mainly because its distinctive humor won’t resonate with everyone.
If the developers include humor, they’re essentially accepting a potentially smaller player base, as what people find funny varies greatly. The first Bad Company game didn’t perform well commercially. While Bad Company 2 was more successful, it still didn’t reach the sales numbers of Battlefield 3.
Despite this, Goldfarb doesn’t dismiss the chance that Vince Campella, now leading the Battlefield franchise, might take a gamble. Campella is known to be a big fan of the Bad Company series. Following the success of Battlefield 6 – which rebuilt trust with players and EA after earlier problems – the team might get more creative freedom, potentially allowing them to use the existing script for Bad Company 3. This depends on the developer continuing to make Battlefield 6 successful and keeping fans happy.
