Final Fantasy 14’s next expansion ushers in an ice age and adds in an Evangelion crossover for good measure

Here we go again! Final Fantasy 14 is releasing another expansion, which means my social media feed is about to be overwhelmed with pictures of the popular bunny and cat character designs. This one’s called Evercold, and the trailer suggests a freezing winter is coming to the world of Eorzea. The big story arc that began with the last expansion, Dawntrail, now has an official name: the Godless Realms Saga. It sounds…interesting!

Alongside many other updates, a new Alliance Raid was announced for update 8.0, and it’s a really exciting collaboration with the classic anime Neon Genesis Evangelion. Called “Ghosts of Desire,” the raid will feature Eva Unit-01 and music from the show, based on a recent trailer. While details are scarce, I’m confident we’ll see outfits inspired by the characters Rei and Asuka.

FINAL FANTASY XIV: Evercold Teaser Trailer

Okay, so the free trial for this MMO is getting a massive boost! They’re letting us play all the way up to the Shadowbringers expansion – seriously, that’s the one everyone loves, up to patch 5.5. There are still some restrictions, but you can experience a huge chunk of the story without paying a dime. And get this – they’re changing up the combat system! There are two ways to play now: Reborn Mode, which is how it always was for all 21 jobs, and Evolved Mode. Square Enix says Evolved Mode will make each job feel more unique, but honestly, I’m not totally sure what that means yet. I’m excited to try it out, though!

Update 8.0 will introduce two new playable jobs: a tank and a ranged physical damage dealer. Details about these jobs haven’t been revealed yet. Players will also have more options for customizing their characters. The game is moving towards a live service model with seasons, grouping patches into seasonal releases. These seasons will focus on overhauling how players earn rewards and progress, and won’t be like traditional season passes. Additionally, the developers are making the game more accommodating to players’ schedules by removing daily tasks and replacing them with a new weekly progression system.

There’s a lot more to explore! If you have a few hours free, you can watch the presentation from yesterday’s Final Fantasy 14 Fan Festival.
