F1 driver hits animal on track during Canadian GP practice session

Formula 1 driver Alex Albon is well-known for his love of animals and even has an Instagram account dedicated to his pets. Unfortunately, he accidentally hit and killed a marmot with his car on Friday.

During practice for the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, a small marmot ran onto the track right in front of Williams driver Alex Albon. He couldn’t avoid hitting the animal, which unfortunately died on impact. Albon’s car then crashed into the wall, and television networks chose not to replay the incident out of respect for the marmot.

Williams team boss James Vowles told Sky Sports F1 that Alexander Albon’s crash caused significant damage to the car. He added that Albon was primarily concerned about his mother, and jokingly said he might have to ‘adopt’ a whole family of marmots to make up for the incident.

The situation took a poignant turn when Lewis Hamilton, also an animal lover, revealed he’d hit a marmot during last year’s race. He described the incident as “devastating” and admitted he was more concerned about the animal than the damage to his Ferrari.

For decades, small rodents called marmots have lived on the island where the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve race track is located. Each year, organizers try to safely move as many as possible before the race, but some always return.

Alexander Albon escaped his crash without injuries.
