GameStop’s Ryan Cohen just called out eBay’s $2.4 B marketing spend like a barista slams an overpriced latte at you. After eBay posted a new Senior Manager of Marketing Effectiveness, Cohen had the audacity to question whether all that money is actually spent on real marketing.
He’s not just throwing shade. The entire tiff started when GameStop’s outrageous $56 B takeover offer got turned down and then, on top of that, eBay decided to politely (and permanently) ban his seller account.
Cohen Wonders Where the Cash Goes
In response to a thread about eBay’s support woes and account hiccups, Cohen took to X (formerly Twitter) and quipped that a company with $2.4 B in marketing should, at the very least, pay attention to the basics.

When eBay announced a Toronto-based Marketing Effectiveness role, Cohen quote‑tweeted, pointing out the job’s grand mission: discover where the money is headed.
Now listed under job code R0074539, it lives in eBay’s Marketing & Communications division under the elusive Head of Marketing Efficiency. In FY 2025, eBay spent a cool $2.4 B on sales and marketing.
GameStop vs. eBay: The Never‑Ending War
The jab is fundamentally tied to the GameStop acquisition saga: GameStop offered $56 B in cash and stock (roughly $125 per share). TD Securities threw in a reassuring letter promising up to $20 B in financing.
The eBay board, however, tripped over the offer, calling it nothing more than a shiny fantasy after consulting outside advisors.
Not long after the public spat blew up, eBay revoked Cohen’s seller account completely, citing “risk to the community.” After all, who can resist a dramatic removal from the platform?
Cohen had been slickly selling GameStop merch on eBay, from shop signs to carpet squares. The ban got a lot of attention-and many labeled it a blatant PR stunt.
With the deal dead and his account gone, Cohen has been harping on eBay’s operations. The new marketing hire gives him a full‑time target to sharpen.
