Dragon Ball’s New Hero Is Goku’s Descendant From the Distant Future

just introduced a brand-new major protagonist for the series with deeply personal ties to Son Goku.

The Dragon Ball Games Battle Hour showcased a particularly thrilling game, created with significant input from Akira Toriyama. This new title offers a fresh perspective on the Dragon Ball universe, taking place over 200 years in the future. Players will meet Brett, a new hero who fights alongside them.

The new hero strongly resembles Son Goku, sporting spiky hair, dark features, and that same cheerful grin. Even his name seems to hint at a family connection, making it clear he’s likely a descendant of Goku.

The Name Pun of Dragon Ball’s Newly-Introduced Hero Reveals He’s Related to Gohan and Pan

Dragon Ball often features clever character designs, particularly those created by Akira Toriyama – and Brett, the creator of Xenoverse 3, is one of those designers. Given this, the joke surrounding Brett’s name strongly implies he is a descendant of Goku.

I’ve always loved how the Dragon Ball creators play with names! You see it with all the Saiyans – Vegeta, Raditz, even Goku’s original name, Kakarot, are all based on vegetables. But Brett’s name is a really clever twist! Instead of another veggie pun, they leaned into his family connection to Goku. It’s a play on the Japanese pronunciation – ‘Brett’ becomes ‘Buretto,’ which sounds just like ‘buredo’ – that’s the Japanese word for ‘bread’! It’s a subtle but brilliant detail.

The fact that Brett is named after bread strongly suggests he’s related to Gohan, not just the broader Son family. This is because both Brett and Gohan have names inspired by types of grain.

Gohan’s name actually means “rice” in Japanese. Similarly, his daughter Pan is named after the Japanese word for “bread.” Therefore, giving Brett a bread-related name continues a family tradition started with Gohan and carried on by Pan, establishing him as a part of that legacy.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 Might Be The Most Canonical DBZ Video Game Since Dragon Ball Online

When Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 was announced, Executive Producer Akio Iyoku explained that the game’s world was entirely conceived by Akira Toriyama. Iyoku also shared in an interview during the Dragon Ball Games Battle Hour that Toriyama was heavily involved in the game’s creation, even designing characters based on his own original artwork.

Watching the release of Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3, I’m struck by how much of Akira Toriyama’s work went into it. It honestly feels like fans are getting the most direct involvement from him ever. The only other game that comes to mind is Dragon Ball Online from 2010. Toriyama actually wrote the story and designed characters for DBO, and it even introduced the idea of the Time Patrol – led by Future Trunks, no less! Plus, DBO was set in Age 1000, just like Xenoverse 3. It’s amazing to see those connections come full circle.

With each new Xenoverse game, the series has added more content. Xenoverse 3 appears to be bringing the game’s story in line with the events of Dragon Ball Online. While many details about Xenoverse 3‘s story and gameplay are still unconfirmed, the recent trailer shown by Battle Hour offers plenty to discuss.

The trailer introduces a new Saiyan character with a hairstyle strikingly similar to Vegeta’s, and a young woman who looks a lot like Videl. We also see Bulma, Piccolo, and Gamma Android 1 return, and Bulma’s presence in the future makes us wonder if other familiar faces from the Z Fighters might still be around.

With the Dragon Ball Super manga set to continue with Toyotarou at the helm, the game Xenoverse 3 seems to be offering fans a glimpse into the future and what the world will look like after everything is finished. While it’s always been clear that Goku, Vegeta, and the Z Fighters will ultimately defeat evil, it’s intriguing to see the kind of world Goku’s actions will create.

It’s touching to see Goku’s personality reflected in his future descendant, Brett. Like Goku, Brett has a relaxed and joyful approach to fighting, making him a natural heir to carry on Goku’s legacy.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 is currently for PS5 and Xbox Series via digital retailers.
