Broly was created by Akira Toriyama and first appeared in the 1993 animated film, Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan. The film, directed by Shigeyasu Yamauchi with a screenplay by Takao Koyama, introduced Broly as the newest powerful enemy threatening the universe.
Broly and Goku were born on the same day. In the non-canonical film Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan, Broly encounters Earth’s heroes because his father, Paragus, summons them. Paragus claims he needs help finding the incredibly powerful Legendary Super Saiyan, while also trying to protect the people of New Vegeta.
When The Legendary Super Saiyan came out, it was a huge success with both critics and audiences, earning over $21.7 million and almost universal praise. It was so popular that two sequels, Dragon Ball Z: Broly – Second Coming and Dragon Ball Z: Bio-Broly, were released the following year. The second sequel, Bio-Broly, featured a clone of Broly who many found even more frightening than the original.
Broly became a fan favorite, leading Akira Toriyama to bring him back in a new Dragon Ball movie years later. The film was a huge success, earning over $124 million worldwide. As of today, Dragon Ball Super: Broly has an 84% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on reviews from critics. Audiences also loved it, giving it a score of 93% based on over 2,500 user reviews.
